BOSTON - Having not lost a regular season conference game since Oct. 5, 2024, Emmanuel women's soccer salvaged a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night, thanks to a 90th-minute goal, tying Norwich in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Clemente Field. The Saints move to 6-3-3 (5-0-2 GNAC) this season with the draw. Dating back to last season, Emmanuel is 11-0-2 against GNAC opponents over the last 13 matches. The Cadets go to 4-3-4 (2-2-3 GNAC) with their half of the draw.
The Saints had numerous opportunities throughout the match, but near misses and timely stops by Cadets keeper, junior
Hannah Jenkins, kept Wednesday's GNAC match scoreless through more than 80 minutes.
Norwich broke through first in the 82nd minute on a counterattack originating from their own defensive third. As the attack began, Cadets junior
Kat Probst dribbled through the midfield and slid a pass through the Saints backline to a breaking
Heidi Smith, who received the pass and went in on a breakaway. The rookie striker made no mistake, firing a shot from 15 yards out into the back of the net, giving the Cadets a 1-0 lead.
The 82nd-minute goal is the first time the Saints have trailed in the regular season against a GNAC opponent since the loss on Oct. 5, 2024, to Johnson & Wales.
With time running short and opportunities to equalize limited, senior captain
Annebel Balogh de Galantha rescued the Saints from defeat, scoring off a free kick. From 30 yards out, as the clock ticked under a minute, Balogh de Galantha fired a shot on goal, which deflected off a Norwich player, leaving Jenkins no chance to recover, tying the match at 1-1.Â
Smith's game-opening tally is the second of the season for the first-year forward, while Balogh de Galantha also netted her second of the season. The senior's 90th-minute tally, officially scored with 58 seconds remaining, is the latest goal the Saints have scored since a 90th-minute goal last season on Sept. 25 against Elms.
The Saints are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 11, as they travel to Dean for a 12:00 p.m. match in GNAC play. The Cadets also return on Saturday, hosting the University of Saint Joseph at 4:00 p.m. in conference action.
