Softball Drops Pair to UMass Boston on Wednesday in Non-Conference Doubleheader

BOSTON – Emmanuel softball dropped a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader with cross-city foe, UMass Boston, dropping the first game 5-4 before being shutout in the second game, 7-0.

GAME ONE: UMass Boston 5 – Emmanuel 4
After falling behind 5-0 through three innings, the Saints comeback attempt fell just shy as they lost their third consecutive one-run game.

The Saints comeback effort started in the top of the fourth with the visitors loading the bases with two outs. Senior Abigail Farr stepped and produced a two-run double into right-center field, cutting the deficit to 5-2.

The run scoring would continue in the fifth as Emmanuel again loaded the bases with two outs. This time, senior Amanda Penney knocked a single through the left side of the infield, scoring first-year Molly Carnes, as the Saints now trailed 5-3.

Emmanuel added another run in the sixth, once again loading the bases, this time with no outs. After a fielder's choice and out at home kept the bases loaded, Carnes hit a sacrifice fly into right field, scoring junior Christyna Winstead, putting the Saints down one.

After putting two runners on in the seventh, the Saints were unable to score the game-tying run, ending the game with a strikeout and groundout to first, as the Beacons hung on for the 5-4 win.

Eight of the Saints nine starters finished with at least one hit in game one, including sophomore Mia Fernandes and Farr batting 2-for-4, each with a double. Farr added two RBI while Carnes finished with two runs scored.

GAME TWO: UMass Boston 7 – Emmanuel 0 (Final – 5 Innings)

All the scoring in game two came in the bottom of the second as the Beacons scored seven runs on eight hits, ultimately leading to the 7-0 win.

Beacons senior Amauri English opened the scoring with an RBI double to the left-center field gap, giving UMB a 1-0 lead. English would later score on an RBI single for by first-year Mary Matthews.

Now leading 3-0, the Beacons added to their lead with a two-run single by graduate Haley Tilberry. An RBI single by sophomore Hayley Krockta and an RBI double by graduate Bri Melchionda ended the seven-run inning for UMass Boston, as they held the 7-0 edge until the game was called in the fifth inning due to darkness.

The story on the Beacons defensive side was the combined no-hitter thrown by first-year Izzy Levasseur and graduate Jacqueline Cherry. The Beacons duo allowed four combined walks, but allowed no hits in the victory.
