BRIGHTON, Mass. – Under overcast and rainy skies, Simmons lacrosse (4-7, 3-5 GNAC) was edged out by rival Emmanuel College (8-6, 7-1 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) North Division action on Saturday afternoon.
The first quarter set the tone for the match, ending in a 3–3 tie. Senior
Frida Turriza connected with fellow classmate
Kat Wood to put the Sharks on top first. Moments later fellow senior
Layla Drinkwater got into the scoring, burying a pass from first-year
Everett Garner. The senior connection of Turriza to Wood struck again to put the Sharks up 3-1, before the Saints concluded the quarter with a pair of goals by
Abby Brown and
Madeline Wright.
A pair of goals from Garner and a goal from junior
Leah Finn in the second quarter sent the Sharks into the locker room with an 6-5 advantage.
When the teams returned to the field at the start of the third quarter, both teams exchanged goals early – including two from Turriza in the opening five minutes. However, Emmanuel kept pace scoring three goals of their own, with Wright scoring twice and
Ella Stein adding one goal, as the Sharks maintained their slim, 9-8, lead heading into the final stanza.
The final quarter of the game belonged to Emmanuel as the Saints outscored the Sharks, 3-1, with two player-advantage goals in the quarter. The Sharks mounted a valiant comeback with sophomore
Lauren Krupnikoff scoring on a free position to bring the deficit to one, but it was not enough.
Wright scored a season-high seven goals for the Saints to go along with six draw controls.
Avery Robillard added two assists in the win.
Emmanuel hosts the University of St. Joseph on Wednesday, April 16, for a 7:00 p.m. game. Simmons returns to the field on Wednesday, April 16, when they host New England College at 7:00 p.m.
