BOSTON – With a one-goal lead headed into the fourth quarter, Emmanuel men's lacrosse closed out strong, outscoring Saint Joseph's College 3-0 over the final 15 minutes, leading to a crucial 10-6 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) North Division victory on Wednesday night on Clemente Field.
The win lifts the Saints to 5-5 (4-0 GNAC, 3-0 GNAC North) as they improve their win streak to five straight. The loss bumps the Monks down to 3-6 (1-2 GNAC, 1-1 GNAC North) as they have dropped three in a row.
After surrendering the first goal to Monks sophomore
Brandon Cavicchi, the Saints rattled off the next six goals, spanning over the first and second quarter. Junior
Cole Cloney and first-year
Braxton Bragg scored 22 seconds apart, giving the Saints a 2-1 lead.
Heading to the second quarter, senior defender
Jack Antico scored the first goal of his career, boosting the lead to 3-1. Senior
Ryan Etzo followed with a man-up goal while Cloney and Bragg closed the scoring run with goals in a 1:47 span, giving the Saints a 6-1 lead. Saint Joseph's College added a late goal to trail 6-2 at the break.
The Monks made their run in the third, outscoring the Saints 4-1 to close the gap. Senior
Will Levesque and Etzo traded goals to open the second half scoring, as Emmanuel maintained a four-goal lead. SJC made a charge with Cavicchi, Levesque, and sophomore
Cam Raymond combining for three goals in a 2:03 stretch, cutting the deficit down to 7-6.
With Wednesday's result in the balance, Cloney added insurance early in the fourth quarter, giving the Saints an 8-6 edge. Bragg took advantage of a man-up scenario just two minutes later, furthering the lead, while sophomore
Cooper Mehlhorn added one final tally, leading to the 10-6 win. On the other end, sophomore goalie
Colby Enos was a perfect 4-for-4 on saves in the final 15 minutes.
Cloney and Bragg each finished with three goals, while Etzo chipped in with two goals and one assist. Senior
Sanzio DiGesualdo ended with a game-high four assists. Enos won his fifth straight decision, making 12 stops in the process.
Cavicchi and Levesque scored a pair for the Monks in the loss with Cavicchi adding two assists for a four-point night. Senior
Tyler Moscato added two assists for Saint Joseph's. Sophomore goalie
Reed Wescott made 13 saves for the Monks but took the loss, falling to 2-5 on the year.
The Saints are back in action on Saturday, April 5, traveling to Anna Maria for a 12:00 p.m. game. The Monks are also back Saturday, hosting the University of Saint Joseph at 1:00 p.m.
