Bragg Beats Buzzer, Etzo Scores OT Winner in 14-13 GNAC Quarters Thriller vs. Dean

BOSTON – After giving up a six-goal lead in the second half, Emmanuel men's lacrosse used every last second to complete their comeback, as first-year Braxton Bragg beat the fourth quarter buzzer and senior Ryan Etzo scored an overtime game-winner, lifting the Saints to a 14-13 win over the Dean Bulldogs in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Clemente Field.

The Saints advance into the GNAC semifinals thanks to the last-second heroics, improving to 10-7 on the year. The Bulldogs season comes to a close at 12-4 as the Saints knock Dean out of the postseason for the second time in three years.

Surrendering a six-goal lead, the Saints went from leading 12-6 with 6:45 remaining in the third, to trailing 13-12 with 7:40 left in regulation. Both sides had opportunities to tie or expand the lead, but neither was able to break through until the last possession.

The Saints earned a man-up opportunity in the final 30 seconds, but a late Emmanuel turnover left Dean the ball with 10 seconds to go. Emmanuel's pressure in the Dean defensive end in the final moments forced an immediate turnover, as senior Sanzio DiGesualdo picked up a loose ball with 3.8 seconds left on the clock. DiGesualdo shoveled a pass to Bragg, who fired from 15 yards out, as the horn sounded, and scored the game-tying goal.

In the extra frame, Dean had their best chance with 1:00 to go, but first-year goalie Colby Enos made the last of his 13 saves, keeping overtime going. Emmanuel held for the final shot, and their patience paid off as junior Samuel Yan found a wide-open Etzo at the top of the crease. The veteran attackman made no mistake, shot-faking an original attempt before finding the back of the net with the game-winner.

Bragg gave the Saints a 12-6 lead with 6:45 remaining in the third quarter, setting the stage for a Bulldogs seven-goal charge. Senior Alec Speirs scored twice in a 19-second span to cut the deficit to 12-8.

Dean headed to the fourth quarter down four, but erased that deficit in the matter of 4:08, tying the game at 12-12. The comeback charge was complete with sophomore Manny Alvarez-Segee giving the Bulldogs the lead with 7:40 in regulation.

Bragg scored four goals while his partner in the dramatic comeback, Etzo, finished with a hat trick. DiGesualdo finished with three goals and three assists, while junior Cole Cloney and sophomore Cooper Mehlhorn each scored a pair.

Spiers was fantastic for the Bulldogs, scoring five goals to go with four assists for a nine-point afternoon. Alvarez-Segee added three goals and two assists. Sophomore goalie Dane Duarte came in relief to start the second half and nearly stole the game for Dean, as he made 13 saves on 16 shots.

Emmanuel heads into the GNAC Semifinals on Tuesday, April 29, as they travel to the No. 1 seed in the South Division, Lasell. The time for Tuesday's game has yet to be announced.
