BOSTON - Exploding for eight goals in the second quarter of Saturday afternoon's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) North Division game, the Emmanuel women's lacrosse team picked up their fourth straight win, claiming a 16-11 victory over the Dean Bulldogs on a rain-soaked Clemente Field.
With their fourth straight win, the Saints are now 7-5 (6-0 GNAC, 3-0 GNAC North) and have scored 65 goals in that four-game stretch. The Bulldogs fall to 6-5 (3-2 GNAC, 3-1 GNAC South) as the loss ends their three-game winning streak.
The Bulldogs were off and running in the opening 1:54, scoring three goals, including a pair of
Natalie Peterson to take a 3-0 lead. Emmanuel responded with junior
Madeline Wright scoring, plus a pair of tallies for senior
Rachel Canedy, tying the game 3-3. Dean would walk out of the first quarter with the lead as two goals in 24 seconds gave the Bulldogs a 5-3 edge.
After each side scored early in the second quarter, the Saints took control of Saturday's game with five straight goals in a span of 3:50, surging ahead 9-6. Four different Saints scored in the run, including a pair for senior
Dejaliyah Srimouksavanh, helping the Saints to their three-goal lead. In total, the home side outscored the Bulldogs 8-2 in the second quarter leading to an 11-7 lead at the half.
As the rain continued to come down on Clemente Field, the scoring became hard to find in the third quarter. First-year
Emilia Ferraro and Wright were the only Saints goal scorers, while
Caroline Ramsey scored once for Dean, as the Saints led 13-8 through three quarters. Dean could only close to within four, as the sides both scored three goals in the final 15 minutes, lifting the Saints to a five-goal victory.
Wright finished with a game-high four goals to go with four draw controls, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Canedy, Ferraro, Srimouksavanh, and senior
Abby Brown all scored twice for the Saints in the win.
For the Bulldogs,
Haley Gaunt and
Nina Mederios each had three-goal afternoons. Mederios added seven draw controls in the loss while goalie
Shea Cassini made nine saves to go with a game-best seven ground balls.
The Saints welcome Saint Joseph's College of Maine to Clemente Field on Tuesday, April 8, at 7:00 p.m. The Bulldogs are also back in action on Tuesday, hosting the University of Saint Joseph at 3:00 p.m.
