Men's Soccer Opens 2025 Campaign With 2-2 Draw at Rhode Island College

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Emmanuel men's soccer were unable to hold on to a two-goal lead on Friday night in the Saints 2025 season opener, drawing 2-2 against the Rhode Island College Anchormen at Alumni Stadium in non-conference play on a rainy evening.

The Saints and Anchormen both go to 0-0-1 with the result, as the game was delayed an hour thanks in part to inclement weather in the area.

Emmanuel senior Joe Anderson opened the scoring early on Friday night, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. The Saints lead doubled in the 21st minute with rookie Lucas Silva getting on the scoresheet in his first career collegiate game, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Rhode Island College would strike back in the 55th minute, cutting the deficit in half with the first of the season by Ian Mackin. The Anchormen pressured all match and their effort paid off in the 67th minute, tying the match on a tally from Julian Orellana.

Saints first-year goalie Owen Silva made eight stops in his first career collegiate appearance, playing the full 90 minutes in earning the tie. RIC's Shane Merklein didn't register a save, but also earns the draw with Friday's 2-2 result.

Emmanuel returns home to Boston and takes a trip over to Wentworth on Sunday for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff. The Anchormen head to Roger Williams next Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. match.
