BOSTON - After Emmanuel and Wentworth men's soccer opened their seasons with draws on opening day to Rhode Island College and Colby-Sawyer, respectively, the Saints and Leopards faced off to a scoreless draw on Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field. Both sides sit at 0-0-2 through the first two matches of the season.
An incredibly even contest for 90 minutes, both sides managed 10 shot attempts, with the Leopards holding a 6-4 shots on goal advantage. Emmanuel led the game in corners with a 6-5 edge.
Both sides had a quality chance in the opening minutes with Saints senior
Pierre Paul Labossiere forcing a turnover inside the penalty area. The senior forward quickly fired a shot on frame, forcing a diving stop to the right by Leopards goalie
Adrian Sanchez. A free kick chance for Wentworth from 25 yards out was struck solidly by
Carlos Jimenez, but Saints senior keeper
Maddox Pierce managed to punch away the attempt as it headed for the top corner.
The shot attempts faded as the match went on with Maddox and Sanchez combining for just three stops in the second half. In the 78th minute, similar to Jimenez's attempt in the first half, the Leopards again fired a free kick opportunity on goal, which was saved by Maddox.Â
Maddox made six saves on the afternoon, earning his first result of the season to move to 0-0-1. Sanchez made four stops while also moving to 0-0-1 on the year. Only Wentworth's David Lemus recorded more than one shot on goal, ending the afternoon with a pair of shots on target.
The Saints will look for their first win of the campaign as they return to play on Saturday, Sept. 6, with a 2:00 p.m. match at Johnson & Wales. The Leopards will also look for their first win as they host Clark on Sept. 3 at 6:00 p.m.
