NEW LONDON, Conn. – Emmanuel women's soccer was relentless throughout the Saints 7-0 victory over the Mitchell Mariners Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play from Alumni Field.
The Saints improve to 3-2-1 this season, and 2-0 in GNAC action. The Mariners fall to 1-3, including 0-3 in the conference.
Emmanuel's first goal of the contest didn't come until the 14th minute. After an attempt by
Paige Letourneau and save by Mariners keeper Ronnie Keays, freshman
Carla Andreu Panighi made a great finish on the rebound to put it past Keays, give the Saints a 1-0 lead, and score her first career goal as a Saint. The Mariners own goal in the 36' provided the Saints a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Saints provided plenty of offense in the second half. First-year,
Grace Foster, scored her first collegiate goal in the 52nd minute and Letourneau notched her first goal of the day on an assist from Sarah Dulligan, immediately following Foster's score, in the 54th minute to put the Saints ahead 4-0
The Saints closed the game by scoring three more times in the final 20 minutes. Letourneau made it 5-0, tallying her second goal of the contest in the 71st minute on an assist from junior
Libby Tennant. Sarah Dulligan found the back of the net in the 74' on an assist by Letourneau and again in the 80th minute on a penalty kick after a foul on Mariners Halie Jennings.
Dullaghan and Letourneau each finished with two goals and one assist, while sophomore goalie
Teigan Robie earned the win, improving to 3-2-1 on the year.
The Saints are back in action with more GNAC play on Wednesday, September 24 at Albertus Magnus College at 7:00 p.m. in New Haven, Connecticut.
