PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Emmanuel women's volleyball boosted its winning streak to nine matches this afternoon, sweeping a tri-match Saturday in New York with wins over St. Joseph's Long Island and the Pratt Institute. The Saints need five sets to take down SJLI before taking down Pratt in straight sets.
In the opening match of the day, the Saints found themselves in a 2-0 hole against the Golden Eagles. The comeback started in the third set with the frame tied 22-22. A trio of attack errors by the Golden Eagles led to the Saints winning the third 25-22.
In the fourth, the Saints combined for 13 team kills, hitting .250 from the floor, while eight errors by St. Joseph helped Emmanuel to a 25-15 fourth set victory. Emmanuel capped off the comeback with the use of a 7-0 run in the deciding set, on their way to a 15-6 fifth set triumph.
The opening set against Pratt closed 25-20 in favor of the Saints, thanks to a late run, claiming five of the final six points to win the set. The Saints combined for 13 team kills in the second set, hitting a day's-best .300 from the floor, winning the second 25-10. A dozen more team kills followed in the third, as the Saints swept the Cannoneers with a 25-15 third set score.
Sophomore Letitia Bossou led the Saints in both matches, posting a team-high 15 kills against the Golden Eagles, followed by a match-high 10 against Pratt. Sophomore Amber Hong had a season-high 12 kills against Saint Joseph, while first-year Ayla Evans posted a career-high 12 kills in the same match.
The nine-match winning streak is the second time in as many seasons the Saints have had a winning streak of this length. Emmanuel sits at 13-1 this season, continuing to match the start the 2003 program had. The best open to a season on record comes from the 2003 team, who started the season 16-1.
Emmanuel looks to keep their hot start alive on Friday, Oct. 3, as they head to New England College for a 6:00 p.m. match in conference play.
