NORTON, Mass. - The Hall of Fame case took another step forward for Emmanuel women's basketball head coach Andrew Yosinoff on Monday evening, as the Emmanuel Saints picked up a 72-51 victory over the Wheaton Lyons, delivering the 937th victory for Coach Yosinoff in his illustrious career. Monday's non-conference victory moves Yosinoff into seventh place on the all-time women's college basketball coaching wins list, passing Naismith Hall of Famer, Muffet McGraw.
The road to 937 was a turbulent journey, as the Saints held a 34-30 advantage at the half, despite forcing 19 Wheaton turnovers. The visitor's shot 16-for-35 from the field in the half, as Emmanuel held a four-point edge through two quarters.
Out of the locker room, the Saints captured all the momentum, as the historic night became increasingly inevitable as the second half carried on. With the Saints leading by five early in the third, Emmanuel broke away from the Lyons with the use of a 16-0 surge, spanning 3:54, as the small Saints advantage ballooned into the largest lead to that point, 52-31. Junior
Kalia Saunders, and sophomores
Tyra Blye and
Lia Krumian, all scored four points as part of the run, combining for a dozen of Emmanuel's 16 points in the outburst.
Emmanuel took their large lead into the fourth, as the Lyons could only get as close as 13 in the final quarter. The visitor's led by as many as 24 late in the game, as a three-pointer by senior
Megan Reilly gave the Saints a 70-46 lead. As the final minute ticked away, the milestone victory was secured as the Saints claimed a 72-51 win at Emerson Gymnasium.
Saunders and fellow junior
Geanna Bryant both finished with 14 points in the win, while Bryant added nine steals and six assists. Blye chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds in 30 minutes for the Saints. The Saints combined for 22 steals on Monday night, the second-most in a game for Emmanuel this season.
Lyons senior
Regan Keyter led all scorers with 23 points, while adding six boards and a steal for Wheaton. Junior
Cheyenne Colbert netted 12 points, pulled down eight rebounds, to go with an assist and a block.
The Saints return to the court on Wednesday, Jan. 14, when they host Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Albertus Magnus College at 5:30 p.m. in the Jean Yawkey Center, while Wheaton heads to Worcester, Mass. on Jan. 17 to open the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) slate against Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 3:00 p.m.
