Women’s Basketball Uses Dominant Second Frame to Cruise past SJC, 72-46

Standish, M.E. - Women's basketball remained perfect in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Tuesday night as they throttled the Monks of Saint Joe's. The Saints (10-5, 3-0) outscored Saint Joe's (7-9, 2-2) 27-7 in the second frame, shooting 70% from the field and they never looked back, cruising to a 72-46 victory.

Early on, this looked like a defensive battle, with just under four minutes to play in the first quarter, a layup from first year forward Nylah Mitchell put the Saints up 4-3. That would be the beginning of a 9-0 run for the visitors, giving them some breathing room at 11-3. The quarter was capped off by yet another basket in the paint by Mitchell to extend the lead to 17-9.

In the second quarter, Emmanuel kicked it into high gear, dominating the paint and getting whatever they wanted on the offensive end. With just under six to play in the period, and the Saints holding an 18 point advantage, a block by senior forward Megan Reilly kick-started another fast break. This resulted in a layup from Tyra Blye, just one of the many examples of the visitors turning defense into offense as they take a 20 point lead at 33-13. With under two to play, a layup from Eliana Jackson put the visitors up a whopping 30 points at 43-13. Finally, some free throws from the Monks put a stop to what was a 14-0 run. Both teams headed into the locker room with Emmanuel firmly in control, holding a 44-15 advantage.

Into the third frame, the Saints still had their foot on the gas, as a free throw from Mitchell, one of her 21 points on the night, gave the team its biggest lead of the game at 55-19. The team maintained a 30 point lead into the fourth, where they never relinquished control. Finishing off the Monks by a score of 72-46.

Nylah Mitchell led the way in scoring, pouring in 21 points in just 18 minutes of action. First year guard Shea Canavan also added in 14 points, along with a career high nine rebounds.

The Saints tallied 56 points in the paint as well as19 steals. They also did not make a three the entire game, yet still held a sizable advantage for most of the contest. A sign that the team is hitting their stride at just the right time with GNAC play fully underway.

The Saints will look to improve to 4-0 in conference play on the road this Saturday when they travel to West Hartford for a 1:00 PM tipoff versus the University of Saint Joseph (CT).
