Boston - Men's Volleyball came out hot Friday night on Andy Yosinoff court, but could not seal the deal, as they would go on to lose the final three sets of the match in a 3-2 defeat. The Saints (1-5) looked poised to make a clean sweep of the visitors, but after a sluggish third set, Endicott (1-0) took control and did not look back.
The first set was a battle, as each side was trading points. The Gulls held a 14-12 advantage before a quick 4-0 spurt from Emmanuel propelled them back into the lead at 16-12, highlighted by a
Cayson Branconier service ace. Later in the set, a kill from first year setter
Tye Barrett put the Saints up 20-16, as they held on for a 25-20 victory.
The second set was more of the same, as neither side was able to put together a sizable run. The score was 10-8 when senior
Trey Guest had the highlight of the night, sending a loud spike directly to the floor to give the home team a three point advantage. The gulls were fighting, down just one at 24-23, but a kill from freshly subbed in
Cody Gibendi gave Emmanuel a 2-0 match advantage.
The Saints were never able to get into rhythm in the third set, and a 4-0 run from Endicott to put them up 17-11 was just the spark the visitors needed, propelling them to a 25-15 dominant third set victory.
Looking to close the game out, Emmanuel started the fourth set with energy, jumping out to a 4-1 advantage after an attack error from the Gulls. Unfortunately, that energy continued to wane throughout the set, as any momentum the Saints got, a service error would seemingly follow. This was the case when the team cut the deficit to 16-14, but yet another service error quickly swung momentum back towards Endicott, as they won the fourth set by a score of 25-18.
In a do or die fifth set, the score was knotted up at 7-7, but unfortunately the gulls took five of the next seven points, taking a 12-9 advantage into the crucial moments of the match. The Saints then followed with yet another electric kill from Branconier, but could not string together enough of those to grab the fifth set. Falling by a score of 15-12 in the last set, ultimately dropping the match 3-2.
The Saints were led by senior
Trey Guest, who notched a season-high 20 kills.
Tye Barrett tallied 30 assists, and
Cayson Branconier chipped in with a career-high 14 kills.
Men's Volleyball will return to the court this Saturday as Bard and Elms will be welcomed to Andy Yosinoff Court for a tri-match. The Saints will take the court at 11:00 AM versus Bard, and 3:00 PM versus Elms.
