NEWTON, Mass. – Four Saints found double figures in scoring, while Emmanuel slowly pulled away on Saturday afternoon in a 73-60 win over the Lasell Lasers in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play from the Lasell Athletic Center. The Saints improve to 13-5 (6-0 GNAC) this season, while the loss drops Lasell to 15-5 (4-3 GNAC).
On an afternoon where neither side led by more than two possessions in the first half, the Saints were first to seize momentum, opening the second half on a 6-0 run, including four points by sophomore
Tyra Blye, which gave the Saints a 40-31 lead.
That slim margin would hold through the entire second half, as the visitors held off any run made by Lasell. The Lasers cut into the deficit by the end of the third quarter, as they trailed 50-44 with 10 minutes to go.
The first double-digit lead of the afternoon took until 4:45 remaining in the game, as the Saints started the frame outscoring the Lasers 11-6, taking an 11-point edge following a corner three-pointer by first-year
Shea Canavan.
Emmanuel outscored Lasell 23-16 in the final quarter, as the Lasers could only get as close as nine in the final minutes, as the Saints closed out a 7-1 January with Saturday's 73-60 victory.
Canavan finished with a team-high 16 points in 18 minutes off the bench. Junior
Geanna Bryant was impactful across the court, finishing with 10 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, and five steals. First-year
Nylah Mitchell added 14 points, while senior
Megan Reilly chipped in 13.
Lasell's
Laura Johnson led all players with 22 points and 27 rebounds, playing a full 40 minutes. The 27 rebounds are the third time this season Johnson has pulled in that many boards, while marking her first career 20-20 game.
Abigail Duclos also played a full 40, adding 11 points and three steals.
The Saints are back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 3, hosting Regis in a game between the two top teams in the GNAC, with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. The Lasers head to Saint Joseph's of Maine on Tuesday night for a conference game with the Monks.
