Men’s Soccer draws with Fitchburg State, 1-1, in tight battle

Boston, Mass. – The Emmanuel Saints men's soccer team's winning streak came to an end on Monday after settling for a 1-1 draw against the Fitchburg State Falcons at Roberto Clemente Field in the team's final non-conference match-up of the season. The draw gives the Saints a 3-5-3 overall record (2-2-1 GNAC) and the Falcons a 4-5-2 overall record (2-1-1 MASCAC).

In the first half, the Saints did a great job of controlling the possession of the ball. The Saints posted nine shots and created many opportunities inside the Falcons end of the field. One play resulted in a corner kick that was struck into the heart of a sea of players on both teams in the box, then junior midfielder Rafael Matamoros found the loose ball and shot it into the back of the net to give the Saints a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.

The Saints held that lead until the second half. After a turnover by Emmanuel in its own end, the Falcons quickly moved the ball to set up a shot. Erick Estrada buried the shot in the back of the net in the 60th minute to even up the game 1-1. Despite outshooting the Falcons 20-7 with six shots on goal to Fitchburg State's two, the Saints drew against the Falcons to close out non-conference play.

Now, Emmanuel's seven games of the regular season are all against Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponents. The Saints' next match will be on the road against the New England College Pilgrims. Kickoff for that match will be on Wednesday, October 7, in Henniker, N.H.
