Women's Lacrosse Opens 2026 Season With 16-7 Loss at Smith

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Bears junior Kyra Hawk scored her 100th career goal in tonight's 16-7 Smith College lacrosse win over Emmanuel in the home-opener. The Bears' offense was led by a strong first quarter, where it outscored its opponent 7-0. The Saints begin the year 0-1, while Smith evens its record to 1-1. 

The game began with Smith's Leila Bannon securing the opening draw control. The Bears capitalized on a turnover by Emmanuel, with Caroline Sanders scoring the first goal at 12:13. Skylar Burkhart added another goal for Smith at 8:41, assisted by Sanders. Sanders continued her offensive presence with a tally at 4:58, followed by Hawk extending the lead with a goal at 4:01. The Bears maintained their momentum, with Jordan Hoffman scoring from a free position at 3:43. Hawk added her second of the game at 1:51, concluding a dominant first quarter as Smith led 7-0.

Hawk opened the scoring in the second with a goal at 10:42, assisted by Sanders, and added another at 7:49, assisted by Burkhart. Sanders also found the back of the net at 9:48, contributing to Smith's offensive momentum. Jenna Paczkowski  and Hawk each scored unassisted goals at 4:06 and 2:20, respectively. Emmanuel was turned away on multiple occasions with Brooke Testa making crucial saves, including stops on shots by Ella Stein and Madeline Wright, preserving Smith's commanding 12-0 lead by the end of the half.

Smith maintained a strong offensive performance in the third quarter, extending their lead over Emmanuel. Hawk scored twice, first at 13:28 assisted by Burkhart, and again at 4:35 with an assist from Sanders. Sanders also contributed a goal at 11:05 and a crucial turnover at 35 seconds remaining, while Hoffman found the net at 1:58. Emmanuel responded with two goals from Wright at 9:15 and 6:35 as the quarter concluded with Smith leading 16-2.

Emmanuel mounted a solid offensive surge in the fourth quarter, scoring five unanswered goals against the Bears. Emilia Ferraro opened the scoring at 10:59, followed by Anna Nichols at 9:13, assisted by Stein. Wright added to the tally with goals at 7:05 and a final strike with seven seconds left. Avery Robillard also contributed with a goal at 5:46.

With her last tally of the night with seven seconds remaining, Wright moved into second place all-time in career goals for Emmanuel, moving past Sarah Higgins ('16), as the Saints senior has scored 149 career goals. 

The Saints are back in action on Wednesday, March 4, as they travel to Keene State for a 4:00 p.m. game.
