Saints Set New Program Record, Dominate Elms 24-1

CHICOPEE, Mass. — The Emmanuel College men's lacrosse team set a new program record goals scored in a single game (24) on Wednesday evening, dismantling host Elms College by a final score of 24-1 at Leary Field to move to 3-3 on the year and 3-1 in  Great Northeast Athletic Conference play.

The Saints wasted no time asserting control, scoring four unanswered goals in the first quarter to build an early cushion. Samuel Yan opened the scoring at 13:16, and Gavin Hunt followed with a Yan-assisted goal shortly thereafter. Austin Overmeyer and Ethan Madura each added tallies to push the lead to 4-0 before Elms' Taahir Busaidy provided the Blazers' lone score of the game with just over six minutes remaining in the first.

Any hope of an Elms comeback was quickly extinguished in the second quarter, when Emmanuel erupted for nine goals. Madura was the driving force in the period, finishing with three goals in the frame — including two man-up conversions — all assisted by Yan. Hunt and Overmeyer each chipped in as well, and Brandon Shuman, David Popp, and Billy Doherty also found the back of the net to push the lead to 13-1 at halftime. Yan capped the half with an unassisted tally off a buzzer-beater at the :01 mark.

Emmanuel carried the momentum into the third quarter with eight more goals in a dominant eight-minute stretch to open the period. Hunt and Overmeyer connected in back-to-back fashion in the opening minute of the half, and Shuman, Chase Greenlaw, Christopher Hamblett, and Nikko Kelly all joined the scoring column before Madura closed the quarter with his fifth goal of the night.

The Saints rounded out the scoring with three goals in the fourth, capped by a man-up tally from Greenlaw to seal the 24-1 final.

Madura and Overmeyer each finished with five goals to pace Emmanuel's offense, with Overmeyer also adding two assists for a career-high in goals and points (7). Yan was the team's top playmaker with four assists to go along with three goals for a career-high seven points, while Hunt added three goals, tying a career-high. Shuman contributed two goals and two assists for four points, marking career-highs in all three categories, and Greenlaw tallied two goals and an assist for a career-high three points. 10 different players scored at least one goal in the win.
