Newton - Men's Volleyball ran into one of its toughest challenges of the season on Thursday night when they traveled to Newton to take on the nationally ranked Lasell Lasers, dropping the match in three hard-fought sets. In the team's first game in eight days, the offense could not string together many runs, and Lasell took advantage of it as they cleanly swept their Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foes.
The Saints came out firing in the first set, they grabbed a quick 5-1 lead, highlighted by a loud kill from Senior
Trey Guest. After jumping out to an 8-3 lead, the Lasers responded, scoring 10 of the next 12 points and forcing a timeout from Emmanuel. Once Lasell grabbed the lead, they did not look back, taking the first frame by a score of 25-14.
Like the first set, Emmanuel kept pace with the nationally ranked Lasell. A kill from first year
Cody Gibendi that landed right in between two Lasers tied up the set at six all.
It was 12-12 later in the second set when a block from Senior
Rob Moore and Junior
Cayson Branconier gave Emmanuel the lead, forcing a timeout from Lasell.
Lasell held an 18-17 lead when they went on a set-clinching 5-1 run to gain some distance between them and the Saints. They would end up securing the set by a score of 25-19.
In the final set, Emmanuel held a lead at 3-2 and that would be the last lead they had on the night. As from there a 9-3 run from the home team drained all the life out of the visitors. The Lasers dominated the rest of the set, and continued their impressive season by sweeping the Saints, 3-0.
First year
Brendan McGinley paced the Saints with six kills on the day, followed closely by Guest who finished with five kills. Teddy Teraszkiewicz led the way for the Lasers, finishing with eight kills.
