Saints Softball Caps of THE Spring Games With Losses to UNW (Minn.), Brandeis

CLERMONT, Fla. – Emmanuel softball finished up its Spring Break trip through Florida at THE Spring Game on Friday, suffering losses to the University of Northwestern (Minn.) and Brandeis.

GAME ONE: Northwestern (Minn.) 16 – Emmanuel 2 (Final / 5 Innings)

The penultimate game for the Saints in Florida came against one of their toughest opponents of the trip in the University of Northwestern (Minn.) Eagles.

UNM was on the board first in the top of the second, getting the scoring started with an RBI single, followed by a Saints error, which scored a pair for the Eagles, giving them a 3-0 edge.

The lead grew more in the third with another RBI single, upping the lead to 4-0. Emmanuel broke up the shutout in the bottom half of the inning, thanks to an RBI single by sophomore Grace Garon, as the Saints trailed 4-1.

In the top of the fourth, the Eagles posted eight runs, extending their advantage to 12-1. A pair of one-run hits started the run, followed by back-to-back two-run doubles, as UNW led 10-1. A wild pitch and Saints error capped off the eight-run fourth for the Eagles.

An RBI single by junior Mia Fernandes added another run to the Saints total, but the Eagles added four more in the top of the fifth with consecutive sacrifice flies and a two-run single, on the way to the 16-2 final.

Saints sophomore Sydney Taylor finished 2-for-2 in the game with a pair of singles. Fernandes and Garon both had RBI singles, as Garon continues her strong start to the season with at least one hit in eight of the Saints nine games to open the year.

GAME TWO: Brandeis 00 – Emmanuel 00

The Judges were on the board early, posting six runs in the bottom of the first and four more in the bottom of the second to hold a 10-0 lead. Back-to-back RBI triples got the scoring started in the bottom of the first. A pair of Saints miscues bumped the lead to 4-0 before a two-run triple added the final two runs of the first, giving the Judges a 6-0 edge.

Brandeis added four more in the bottom of the second with numerous singles helping to add to the lead. A two-run single started the scoring in the frame, while back-to-back RBI singles capped off a four-run inning, giving the Judges a 10-0 advantage.

The Judges offense continued their momentum, scoring once in the third and three times in the fourth, scoring in every inning in Friday's 14-0 win over the Saints.
