Boston - Men's Volleyball faced a tall task on Sunday afternoon at the Jean Yawkey Center as they hosted #8 NYU and ended up falling in straight sets. Emmanuel (7-9) was overmatched as the raw power and skill from the visiting Violets (13-4) was too much to overcome.
In the first set, a kill by
Cayson Branconier got things underway, but it did not take long for the Violets to gain control, as they won nine of the next 13 points to take a 9-5 advantage. A bright spot in the first set, and the match overall, for the Saints was first year
Brendan McGinley. He tallied four kills in the first set, and nine kills overall. NYU kept the Saints at bay the rest of the set, winning 25-19.
In the second set, Emmanuel started off neck and neck with the Violets, as a kill from first year
Tye Barrett drew the team within one at 6-5. From there, five of the next seven points went to NYU, as this set was starting to look like a repeat of the first. With the Violets leading 21-14, Emmanuel made one last push in the set, going on a quick 3-0 run highlighted by two kills from senior
Trey Guest. This would unfortunately not be enough as NYU took this set by a score of 25-19.
After starting off the third set holding a 5-2 lead, things began to quickly unravel for the Saints. The Violets responded with a 6-0 run to grab the lead at 8-5. Later in the set, NYU held a 16-13 advantage before they made the back-breaking run of the match, going on yet another 6-0 run to put a dagger into Emmanuel. The Violets took the second set by 10 points, winning 25-15.
Guest led the way with 11 kills for the Saints, followed by McGinley's nine kills. Barrett continued his impressive rookie campaign tallying 25 assists in the match.
