BOSTON – Going to overtime for the first time this season, Emmanuel men's lacrosse suffered a 15-14 loss to the Dean Bulldogs on Tuesday night at Clemente Field in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play. The Bulldogs move to 7-5 (4-4 GNAC), while the Saints fall to 6-6 (5-2 GNAC).
Tuesday's game-winner came halfway through the first overtime frame, as
Marc Sauchuk capped off a hat trick with 2:13 to go. After keeping possession on a missed shot, Sauchuk restarted behind the goal, and immediately drove toward the cage. After crossing goal line extended on the left side of the net, Sauchuk ripped a quick shot into the top near corner, giving Dean its first win on Clemente since 2021.
After surrendering the first goal of the night, the home side rattled off six consecutive goals, including three by senior
Cole Cloney, to give the Saints a 6-1 lead. The Bulldogs chipped away at the Emmanuel momentum, and by outscoring the Saints 6-3 in the second quarter, the visitors found themselves trailing 8-7 at the break.
For the remainder of the night, neither side led by more than two, as the final 30 minutes was a back-and-forth battle for control. Saints senior
Ethan Madura helped the Saints take a 14-13 edge with 2:01 to go, but Dean's
Connor McCarthy answered back just 31 seconds later, tying the game at 14-14.
Cloney finished with a team-high four goals to go along with one assist for a five-point night. Madura and fellow senior
Samuel Yan each finished with a hat trick, while Yan added a pair of helpers on the night. Sophomore
Colby Enos made a season-high 18 saves in goal.
Of the eight meetings between the Saints and Bulldogs since 2021, five of them have been decided by one goal, with two such games going to overtime.
The Saints are back in action on Saturday, April 11, traveling to Saint Joseph's College of Maine for a 7:00 p.m. GNAC faceoff.
