Brighton - Softball (6-20) had the battle of Brookline Ave on it's hands Wednesday night for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader against Simmons (14-16), dropping both the matches in five innings of play. Despite jamming the bases in the first inning of both matches, the Saints were never able to string together consistent offense, falling short against the Fenway rivals.
Game one: Simmons 8 Emmanuel 0 (Final/5)
In the first of two matches from Daly field on Wednesday evening, the Saints faced off against reigning GNAC pitcher of the week Piper Kinney, and they were able to get to her early on. Loading the bases in the first inning before allowing her to record an out. Emmanuel was unable to get any of the runners across the plate as the Sharks were able to get themselves out of a jam.
Â
That would be the Saints best chance to get on the board against Kinney all day, as the bats went quiet. In the second inning, Simmons opened up the scoring as a walk from Abigail Carvalho got the first run of the day in.
Â
Simmons got two more runs in the bottom of the third, but the real crushing blow came in the fifth. The Sharks loaded the bases, and got all the runners home thanks to back to back singles. Yet another RBI single brought home another two runners to give Simmons an 8-0 lead, ending the first match of the day.
Â
Junior Mekayla Poisson tallied two hits to go along with a stolen base on the day, with
Mia Fernandes also recording a hit.
Â
Game Two: Simmons 15 Emmanuel 1 (Final/5)
In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Saints were able to get on the board first. Junior
Mia Fernandes opened up the game with a single, and advanced to third off of a fielder's choice and a wild pitch. Sophomore
Sydney Taylor grounded out to second, but Fernandes was able to score, putting Emmanuel up 1-0 early on.
Â
The Sharks responded quickly, as an RBI double from Emery Kreidel-Reimer brought in two and quickly put the home team back on top in the bottom of the first inning.
Â
In the third inning, Mekayla Poisson continued her stellar day from the plate, recording another single, which would be all from the Saints in the top half of the inning. In the bottom of the third, the Sharks poured it on, adding on 12 runs off of eight total hits and three errors in the frame, extending the lead to 15-1.
Â
The Saints were unable to get any offense going in retaliation, as this match also ended in the fifth inning.
Â
Taylor knocked in the only run of the game, while Fernandes, Poisson and
Emely Rodriguez all tallied hits in the defeat.
