BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Softball Team dropped both games of Friday afternoon's double header to Emerson College. The Lions hosted the two Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) games and came away with 7-0 and 4-0 wins over the visiting Saints. With the victories, Emerson improved to 13-5 overall and 7-1 in GNAC play, while Emmanuel fell to 4-10 on the season and 1-3 in the league.
In game one, Emmanuel's freshman pitcher Jesse Hutchins (Sebago, Maine) threw the six innings, faced 33 batters, and struck out six. She gave up just three earned runs. Sara Murray threw four innings and picked up the win for the Lions. Emerson scored six of its seven runs in the second inning and tacked on one more in the fourth to come away with the 7-0 win.
On offense, Emmanuel tallied six hits, while Emerson notched just one more with seven. For the Saints, Samantha Luther (Carlisle, Mass.) led the offense, going 2 for 3 from the plate. Junior Erin McSheffrey (Woburn, Mass.), and freshmen Chelsey Guselli (Methuen, Mass.), Heather Hamel (Belchertown, Mass.), and Hutchins each got a hit in the effort.
In game two, the Saints kept things closer. Emerson scored just one run in both the first and second innings. The Lions scored two more in the third to cap the scoring on the day, as Emerson finished with the 4-0 win. The Saints had three hits, compared to five by the hosts. Emmanuel's five errors on the day, versus just one made by the Lions, proved to be deciding factors in the losses.
Emmanuel's Luther recorded another hit in game two, as the junior centerfielder hit .500 (3-6) on the day. Freshman first baseman Elyse Turgeon (Dracut, Mass.) went two for three in the second game, including hitting her second double of the season. Freshman Kathryn Copp (Fremont, N.H.) pitched well for the Saints. Copp threw six innings, facing 23 batters and striking out six.
Emmanuel will play GNAC double-headers again on Saturday and Sunday this weekend. The Saints will take on Mount Ida College on Saturday at noon in Newton, Mass. The Saints will then host Rivier College at Rotch Park on Sunday in a 2pm start.
