THE LEAD – On a snowy, windy, late-winter afternoon, the Emmanuel Saints earned their first win of the season while starting 1-0 in conference play, as the Saints defeated the Anna Maria AMCATS, 15-1, on Saturday in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Saints were off and running in the opening minutes, jumping out to a 2-0 lead from goals by junior Ali Bergin (Newbury, Mass.) and the first of the career by first-year Deja Srimouksavanh (Portsmouth, N.H.). All part of a four-goal, first quarter, as EC lead 4-0 after 15 minutes.
  • Emmanuel added seven more goals in the second quarter, including two each by senior Chandra Franca (Woburn, Mass.), junior Megan Steele (Auburn, Maine), and sophomore Alyssa Hogan (Westboro, Mass.). For Hogan, the pair of goals account for the first and second of the career for the sophomore attack, as EC led 11-0 at the break.
  • Anna Maria was first on the board in the third quarter thanks to senior Ashley Rufo (Pittsfield, Mass.), but the Saints answered back with four goals, including the first of the career for first-years Rachel Canedy (Woodstock, Conn.) and Abby Brown (Saco, Maine), giving Emmanuel a 15-1 lead through three quarters.
  • The late-winter game was called off after three quarters of play due to increasing snow and windy conditions.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
