THE LEAD – First year attack Kat Wood (Chelmsford, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal with 15 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to power visiting Simmons University past Emmanuel College, 10-9, Tuesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action at Roberto Clement Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • With less than 30 play to play in the second overtime period, junior Riley Wasiuk (Rutland, Mass.) intercepted a failed Emmanuel clear and dumped the ball to the junior attack Lauren Whitman (Mansfield, Mass.) on the right wing. Whitman found Wood streaking to goal on the weak side for a catch-and-shoot goal for the game-winner.
  • The Saints led 9-8 with 7:38 to play in regulation following a goal by senior Lincoln Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine) but the Sharks sent the game to overtime as Stroller evened the score at 9-9 with 5:43 remaining. Over the final few minutes, each team had decent scoring chances but were unable to capitalize.
  • Emmanuel took its first lead of the game early in the third quarter as first year Deja Srimouksavanh () found the back of the net to give the hosts a 5-4 lead. Simmons answered with three straight including another two by Stroller to pull ahead 7-5 before goals by EC seniors Chandra Franca (Woburn, Mass.) and Jessica Borduas (Woodbury, Conn.) tied the score at 7-7.
  • After EC got on the board first on a score by first year Anna Drillen (Readfield, Maine), Simmons answered with three straight scores including consecutive goals by graduate student Abby Stoller (Wayland, Mass.) to take a 3-1 lead with 10:51 to play in the second quarter. Over the final seven minutes of the half, the Saints responded with a 3-1 flurry of their own with Borduas starting the run followed by a pair of goals by Franca to account for a 4-4 halftime score.
