THE LEAD – The Emmanuel College women's lacrosse team broke open a tight contest scoring 12 straight goals to pull away from Salem State University with an 18-6 non-conference home victory on Thursday evening at Roberto Clemente Field in Boston, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first with goals from sophomore Rachel Canedy (Woodstock, Conn.) and first years Emily Gates (Waterford, Conn.) and Livia Fedele (Spencerport, N.Y.) to set the tone for the evening, building a lead the hosts would never lose.
  • Salem State closed the opening quarter with a goal by Taylor Sujko (Revere, Mass.) before Mackenzie Schmink (Danvers, Mass.) found the back of the net just 1:28 into the second to make it a one goal game at 3-2.
  • Over an 18 second span, Emmanuel responded with two quick tallies from senior Megan Steele (Auburn, Maine) and Gates to regain the three-goal advantage at 5-2 but it was short-lived as the Vikings countered with two markers by Angela Berry (Salem, Mass.) and Schmink to once again pull within a score at 5-4 with 4:21 left in the half.
  • Emmanuel played some of its best team lacrosse of the night over the closing four minutes of the stanza with four straight goals over 1:19 of elapsed time to command a 9-4 cushion heading into halftime. First year Broghan Laundry (Swampscott, Mass.) netted bookend scores with Fedele and classmate Avery Robillard (Rowley, Mass.) finding the twine in between to account for a five-goal cushion at the break.
  • EC dominated the match out of the break, scoring six consecutive goals in the second half to put the game out of reach. Canedy opened the barrage with back-to-back scores followed by goals from Broghan, first years Ella Marschitz (Naperville, Ill.) and Brianna Stephenson (Waterboro, Maine) followed by a player-up goal from Robillard to cap the quarter's scoring with Emmanuel on top, 15-4
  • Sophomores Deja Srimouksavanh (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Abby Brown (Saco, Maine) got into the scoring mix for Emmanuel to open the fourth to extend the lead to 17-4.
  • Salem State junior Megan Parthum (Marblehead, Mass.) ended the Saints unanswered scoring stretch at 12 with a score with 8:40 left in the contest to move the needle to 17-5. Robillard and Schmink traded scores over the final 5:20 of the match to account for the 18-6 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
