CORSAIRS HOLD OFF SAINTS IN MEN'S SOCCER ACTION

Somerville, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Men's Soccer Team was defeated by UMass Dartmouth, 2-0, in the Saints home opener on Thursday afternoon at Dilboy Stadium. The Saints (2-1) held the Corsairs (3-1) scoreless for the much of the first half, while being out-shot 9-4. UMD's rookie midfielder Robert Muller (Rochester, MA) provided the first goal of the game at 42:30, coming off the bench and drilling a dagger from outside the box on the left side to give the Corsairs a 1-0 advantage, heading into the break.

The Saints had several opportunities early in the second half, but could not convert. The Corsairs turned up the heat again in the second stanza, outshooting the Saints, 15-6. UMD struck again at 73:41, when junior defender Alex Bettencourt (New Bedford, MA) headed in a corner kick from senior forward Frank Giampa (Norwood, MA). The Corsairs had a 9-5 advantage on corner kicks for the game.

Junior keeper Rich Covell (Plymouth, MA) picked up the win for UMass, stopping both of the Saints' shots on goal. Emmanuel's sophomore keeper Carlos Perez (Boca Raton, FL) made 9 saves in a tremendous effort for the Saints.

Emmanuel will play at home again on Saturday, when the Saints open up Great Northeast Athletic Conference play against the Raiders of Rivier College in a 4pm start. UMass-Dartmouth will host Fitchburg State College on Saturday afternoon.
