SAINTS STOP NIGHTHAWKS IN SEASON OPENER

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Men's Soccer Team opened the 2008 season with a victory over Newbury College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Saints jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and held on to pick up a 3-1 win over the host Nighthawks.

Freshman defender Ivan Barrera (Millis, MA) netted Emmanuel's opening goal of the season just eight minutes into the contest.  The Saints took a 1-0 advantage into halftime, outshooting the Nighthawks, 5-4, in the first stanza.  Sophomore forward Gavin Molta (Southwick, MA) scored 12 minutes into the second half, assisted by junior captain Dan D'Amato (Huntington, MA), giving the Saints a 2-0 edge.

Newbury struck back at 75:45, when the Nighthawks senior forward John Mawson (Amherst, MA) scored unassisted to make it 2-1.  The two teams notched six shots apiece in the second half.  Emmanuel's third and final goal of the game sealed the win at 85:35 when senior midfielder Ken Bell (Boston, MA) scored off a corner kick.

Sophomore keeper Carlos Perez (Boca Raton, FL) played the full 90 minutes in net for the Saints, making 3 saves in the first win of the season.  Newbury's rookie keeper William McNally (Grafton, MA) made 2 saves, while allowing all 3 goals.

The Saints will play on the road at Lesley University on Tuesday night (9/9).  This game will be played under the lights at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols high school at 8pm.  Emmanuel plays its home opener on Thursday afternoon at 3:30pm vs. UMass Dartmouth.  All Saints home games will be played at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, MA.
