BOSTON, Mass. - Mount Ida College scored five first-half goals en route to a 5-2 win over Emmanuel College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer played at Roberto Clemente Field on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs had a balanced attack with five different players taking part in the scoring. The win for the visitors improved the club to 2-4 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. The Saints dropped to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the league.
The opening minutes of the game proved to be painful for the host Saints. The Mustangs managed to put two goals on the board before the six-minute mark. Mount Ida kicked off the scoring on a beautiful header by junior forward Billy Beauzile (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Beauzile was assisted by freshman midfielder Matt Palatino (Ludlow, Mass.).
The Stangs quickly notched their second goal just two minutes later. Junior forward Hermes Lima (Boston, Mass.) scored unassisted at 5:53, when he drilled a shot from the right side past Emmanuel keeper Wilhelm Du Bois (Key Biscayne, Fla.), giving Mount Ida a 2-0 lead.
The Mustangs continued to apply pressure and less than ten minutes later Mont Ida scored its third goal of the game. Rookie forward Will Daniels (Bethany, Conn.) scored on an open net after a Du Bois deflection to put the visitors on top, 3-0. Daniels was assisted by Palatino, who had a pair of assists on the afternoon. Daniels' goal would prove to be the game-winner.
The Mount Ida forwards continued to pepper the Emmanuel defense with shots, taking 16 chances in the opening period. Another Mount Ida goal gave the Mustangs a 4-0 edge in the 21st minute. This time it was senior defender Leo Roy (Manchester, N.H.), who found the back of the net with an assist from Beauzile.
Emmanuel was able to put one on the board in the 25th minute, when senior captain Byron Glaus (Rumford, Maine) converted a penalty kick to bring the score to 4-1. Glaus was one of just two Saints to take at least two shots on goal during the contest. The Saints totaled just four shots in the opening half.
One final score from the Mustangs before the end of the half would be a devastating blow to the Saints. Junior forward Simon Shallop (Sierra Leone, West Africa) came off the bench to give the `Stangs a 5-1 lead at the break. He was assisted by Daniels in the play.
The Saints came out of halftime more energized and were able to take several more shots than in the first half effort. A breakaway late in the game would give Emmanuel one final goal and cap the scoring on the afternoon. Senior forward Corey McLean (Lincolnville, Maine) found Johnathan Benevides (Lakeville, Mass.) on a feed, which led to his first goal of the season and cut the deficit to three goals.
Mount Ida would come away with the 5-2 and the Mustangs remain undefeated in GNAC play at 2-0. Mount Ida out-shot Emmanuel, 24-11, for the game and led 6-2 in corner kick opportunities.
Sophomore keeper Steven Enright (South Kingston, R.I.) went the distance in net for Mount Ida, making 4 stops. Du Bois finished the day with 11 saves in net for the Saints.
Emmanuel will play again on Monday afternoon in a non-conference match at MIT in a 4pm start. Mount Ida will host Becker College on Tuesday at 3:30pm.
