BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Men's Soccer Team cruised to a 4-0 shutout of Newbury College in the Saints' home opener. The win for Emmanuel marked the season opener for both teams, as well as the first intercollegiate athletic event to be played on the newly renovated Roberto Clemente Field. Senior forward Corey McLean (Lincolnville, Maine) paced the Saints with 2 goals and an assist, while sophomore keeper Patrick Froass (Oneida, N.Y.) picked up the win in net for Emmanuel.
The Saints, playing under the direction of first year Head Coach Colin Goin, stormed out to a 1-0 lead just ten minutes into the contest, when McLean netted his first of a pair of goals on the afternoon. The senior was assisted by rookie defender Max Dolan (Lenox, Mass.). Just fifteen minutes later, Emmanuel's sophomore midfielder Jeremy Scanlon (Woburn, Mass.) came off the bench to give the Saints a 2-0 edge. Scanlon was assisted by freshman Andres Rocha (West Orange, Conn.), who sent a nice cross from the left side, and Emmanuel took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The two teams played twenty-six minutes of scoreless soccer before McClean struck again at 71:04, bringing the score to 3-0. McClean was assisted by junior defender Gavin Molta (Southwick, Mass.), who anchored the Saints' defense all afternoon. Emmanuel would score once more before time expired. McClean led a streaking Kevin Shirley (Madison, Conn.) with a beautiful pass down the right side and the rookie one-timed it into the net, forcing the 4-0 win for Emmanuel.
Froass played the full 90 minutes, tallying two saves and picking up the shut-out win for the Saints. Newbury's freshman keeper Steven Gratta (Hull, Mass.) made 9 saves in the effort for the Nighthawks.
The Saints (1-0) will be back in action on Wednesday night (9/9), when they host Lesley University in a 7pm start. Newbury will be at home on Thursday (9/10), taking on Regis College at 3:30pm.
