BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Men's Soccer Team battled M.I.T. through the wind and rain, but lost, 3-1, in non-conference action on Monday night. After a late start delayed by thunder and lightning at Roberto Clemente Field, the Saints and Engineers played a tough physical game throughout. The Engineers scored an unanswered goal in the first half, and then tacked on two more in the second before the Saints got on the board late in the game. With the loss, Emmanuel falls to 2-3 on the year, while M.I.T. improved to 4-2 overall.

M.I.T. led a strong attack in the first half, putting up a handful of shots and receiving four corner kicks. They possessed well, and gave the Saints very few opportunities. MIT's opening score came by way of rookie midfielder Jonathan Tebes (Hamden, Conn.) off a nice pass by Christian Therkelsen (Nesbru, Norway). The Engineers then took a 1-0 lead into the break at halftime.

Despite falling behind in the opening frame, Emmanuel kept battling. They came out of halftime with a renewed energy. Junior keeper Patrick Froass (Oneida, N.Y.) played spectacular in goal for the Saints, making 11 saves off 14 shots on net by the Engineers. He made several quick diving saves off the wet turf, as well as some jumping reaction saves to keep the Saints within reach.

However, just five minutes into the second half, the Engineers struck again. Rookie midfielder Andrew Fijan (West Chester, Pa.) scored unassisted at 50:25 to put MIT up, 2-0. Fijan's goal would prove to be the game-winner, as the Saints would score just once before time expired.

In the 53rd minute, MIT senior Adriel Fidone (College Station, Texas) played a ball in through traffic that rang off of the left post, right to freshman midfielder Matthew Monheit (Abington, Pa.), who netted a strong third goal for the Engineers.

Ten minutes later in the 63rd minute, Emmanuel's freshman midfielder Danny Richman (Medfield, Mass.) played a ball into classmate Allan Parrelli (Reading, Mass.) to break the silence. Richman factored in a goal for the second game in a row, as both freshmen continued to play in top form for the Saints.

In the end, the Engineers totaled 22 shots, 14 on goal, while the Saints were held to just 4 shots, with 2 on goal. Emmanuel remains winless versus MIT, as the Engineers lead the all-time series between these two programs, 4-0.

The Saints will travel to Buckingham, Browne and Nichols School in Cambridge, Mass. to take on Lesley University on Wednesday (9/13) to take on the Lynx in an 8pm start.
