Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Men's Soccer Team took on the Newbury Nighthawks this Saturday afternoon in a non-conference clash. Newbury downed the Saints on a score of 2-1, in overtime. This was the second consecutive 2-1 loss for the Saints this season. The season opener for the Nighthawks put Newbury at 1-0 on the year, while Emmanuel dropped to 0-2 this season.
The Saints took an early lead in the 10th minute on a Kevin Shirley (Madison, Conn.) goal. This was Shirley's second goal of the young season. The play resulted from hard work in the middle by Jeremy Scanlon (Woburn, Mass.) and Mathew Koenemann (Montpelier, Vt.). The ball fell to Allan Parrelli (Reading, Mass.) who played the ball over the top to Shirley, who ran on it and put it in the back of the net.
Emmanuel controlled much of the first half until a late goal by Newbury freshman Bahadir Aytug (Boston, Mass.) found the back left corner of the net. Aytug was assisted by sophomore Abdul Kamara (Milton, Mass.). The first half ended with the score knotted at 1-1 and with a 12-6 shooting advantage for the Saints.
Late in the first period, freshman Bahadir Aytug (Boston, MA/Perkiomer School) found the back left corner of the net, on a pass from sophomore Abdul Kamara (Milton, MA/Milton), to tie up the contest at one. It stayed that way until throughout the second overtime when Kamara picked up his second assist of the day on Lawer's game-winning goal.
The second half featured 45 minutes of scoreless soccer with chances by both sides. Emmanuel and Newbury both struck the crossbar during the second stanza. It took overtime to separate the sides with a goal by senior Joseph Lawer (Worcester, Mass.) in the third minute to settle the score.
Emmanuel goalie, junior Carlos Perez (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished with 3 saves in the losing effort. Newbury goalie, junior William McNally (Grafton, Mass.) was solid throughout the game making 14 saves in the victory.
Newbury will travel to Cambridge, Mass. to face the MIT Engineers at 7 pm this Wednesday, the 8th. The Emmanuel Saints will face Elms College this Wednesday, September 8th in the squad's home opener at 7pm at Roberto Clemente Field.
