BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Men's Soccer Team remains unbeaten in 2011 after shutting out Newbury College, 3-0, on Tuesday night under the lights at Roberto Clemente Field. After leading 1-0 at the break, the Saints tacked on two second half goals to pull away with the shutout victory. Emmanuel now stands at 2-0-3 on the year, while Newbury drops to 0-4 overall.
The game featured the hosts outshooting Newbury, 32-8, and maintaining much of the possession throughout the contest. Emmanuel dominated the offensive play in the early going, firing shot after shot on Newbury's junior keeper Jeremy Bergeron (Fitchburg, Mass.).
Bergeron managed four saves in the opening stanza, but met his match in the 25th minute, when the Saints netted their first of a trio of goals on the night. Emmanuel's sophomore back Kevin Esposito (Gales Ferry, Conn.) found the head of classmate Kevin Shirley (Madison, Conn.) in the middle of the box, giving the Saints a 1-0 edge. Shirley's goal, his second of the year, would hold up as the game-winner.
Emmanuel drilled 17 more shots at the Newbury defense in the second frame. Freshman striker James Carroll (Guilford, Conn.) tallied his first collegiate marker in the 70th minute. Senior captain Kelly Louis-Charles (Orange, Conn.) picked up the assist, feeding a streaking Carroll on the break.
The Saints' third and final goal of the night came just four minutes later, when sophomore forward Allan Parrelli (Reading, Mass.) scored off a cross from the right side by senior midfielder Jeremy Scanlon (Belmont, Mass.).
Bergeron ended the night with 7 saves for the Nighthawks. Senior keeper Patrick Froass (Oneida, N.Y.) notched his fourth career shutout, stopping both of Newbury's shots on goal.
Emmanuel will play again at home on Thursday night (9/15), when the Saints host the Lynx of Lesley University in a 7pm start. Newbury will take a week off, before playing at Elms College on September 24th.
