STRONG START PROPELS COLBY PAST EC MEN'S LAX

WATERVILLE, Maine - Austin Sayre scored five goals and teammates Derek Youngman and John Grimaldi both had two goals and two assists in Colby College's 17-5 non-conference men's lacrosse win over Emmanuel College on Thursday at Bill Alfond Field.  The Mules, who received votes toward the Top 25 in the most recent national poll, improve to 3-2 overall with the win. Emmanuel drops to 2-4 on the season with the loss.

 

Sayre scored his five goals on just seven shots. He scored the opening goal of the game to help the Mules take a 4-0 lead after one quarter. Colby led 8-0 until the Saints scored in the final minute of the half.

 

Colby scored eight unanswered goals in the third quarter to break the game open, in which Sayre had three of the eight tallies.  Cillian Connor scored his first two collegiate goals for the Mules, who had a 46-26 shot advantage. Mark Philipps also had two goals, while Kevin Seiler, Riley Burke, Tucker Dietrick, and Sam Wasserman all scored once.

 

Tony Cibelli led Emmanuel with two goals and one assist. Chris Curtis had one goal and one assist, while Michael Rogers and Donnie Litzelman both scored once.

 

Colby's Austin Frank was 10-for-14 on face-offs, scooped 11 groundballs, and had two caused turnovers. Jeb Waters added four groundballs and two caused turnovers.

 

Chris Baglivi led Emmanuel with three caused turnovers and three groundballs.  Michael Rainha added two caused turnovers and two groundballs.

 

Tyler Will made five saves and allowed one goal in 42:41 of action for Colby. Dylan Rothenberg played the final 17:19 and stopped eight shots.  Saints goalie Austin Lauzier notched 15 saves in about 50 minutes of action.

 

The game was far from pretty, with Colby turning the ball over 34 times and the Saints 33.  The Mules have outscored their opponents by a 70-39 margin and have a scoring advantage in all four quarters. However, the third period has been Colby's quarter this season, both offensively (22 goals) and defensively (5 goals allowed).

 

The Mules are back in action this Saturday at 1:00 PM, when they host NESCAC opponent Connecticut College.  The Saints will travel to Mount Ida College for a 1:00 PM GNAC battle with the Mustangs.
