THE LEAD:  The University of Saint Joseph (CT) men's lacrosse team broke open one-goal game by holding host Emmanuel College scoreless in the second half en route to a 12-5 Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory Tuesday evening on Roberto Clemente Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED  

  • The Saints struck first with a marker by junior Jack Tierney (South Portland, Maine) to take a 1-0 lead but the Bluejays cashed in on a three-minute locked-in equipment penalty late in the quarter with three man-up scores to lead 3-1 after one. Senior Owen LaPorte (Farmington, Conn.) and sophomore Noah Mocksfield (Colchester, Conn.) found the back of the net during the surge.
  • Mocksfield opened the scoring in the second quarter with USJ's fourth straight man-up score to make it 4-1 before sophomore Evan Baden (Burlington, Conn.) score just 27 seconds later to put the guests ahead 5-1 with 13:28 to play in the half.
  • Over the final 8:30 of the second quarter, the Saints regrouped and outscored USJ by a 4-1 margin to pull the score to within a goal at 6-5 heading into the break. EC got goals from sophomore Derek DelVecchio (Saugus, Mass.), sophomore Ryan Castle (Boxford, Mass.) first year Thomas Quigley (Marblehead, Mass.) and sophomore Drew Chant (Warwick, R.I.) while Samuel Barbetti (Guilford, Conn.) found the net for the Bluejays in the flurry to account for the halftime score.
  • The game stayed at 6-5 through the first five minutes of the third quarter before LaPorte scored his third man-up tally of the evening with 9:44 to play in the stanza to move the score to 7-5, USJ.
  • USJ pulled away over the final three minutes in the third, scoring four goals in a span of 1:58 on the clock to carry an 11-5 cushion into the final quarter.
  • Mocksfield wrapped up the scoring early in the fourth with his third goal of the night to account for the 12-5 final.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • USJ outshot the Saints by a 40-34 margin and also won 13 of 19 faceoffs on the night.
  • The Bluejays made Emmanuel pay for its penalties, scoring on 5-of-8 man-up opportunities while holding EC scoreless on their three chances.
  • Sophomore Trey McCann (Simsbury, Conn.) earned the win in goal with 10 saves on the night while EC first year Eric Anderson (Sparta, N.J.) played well in defeat, stopping a career-high 15 saves between the pipes.

OF NOTE

  • This was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

  • The Saints are back in action on Saturday, April 24 when they travel to Paxton, Mass. to take on Anna Maria College 12:00 PM in an important GNAC showdown.
