WINTHROP, Mass. – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) announced Wednesday afternoon the major award recipients for the indoor men's and women's track and field season, as the Emmanuel women's program earned three of those awards.
Junior Kendall Newton was named the Co-Women's Track Athlete of the Year, after all tiebreakers determined two winners for the award. First-year Alisha Gomes scored the Women's Rookie of the Year honors, while the Emmanuel coaching staff was recognized as the Women's Coaching Staff of the Year, led by head coach Dion Gardner-Crichlow.
Newton took the Co-Women's Track Athlete of the Year award after winning her two individual events at the GNAC Championship. Her mile time of 5:27.18 and her 3,000 meter time of 11:06.78 not only won both events, but were personal bests on the indoor circuit.
Gomes was named Women's Rookie of the Year thanks to a pair of wins in her two individual events, matched with a victory in the Saints 4x400 meter race at the conference championship meet.
The Saints rookie set the program record in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.02 seconds. She would later add a PR time in the 200 meters, crossing the line in 26.52 seconds. Gomes ran the third leg of the 4x400, as the Saints won the event by six seconds with a time of 4:12.77.
For a third consecutive indoor season, the Saints coaches were recognized as the Women's Coaching Staff of the Year. Emmanuel won the women's team title at the GNAC Championship by nine points over Saint Joseph's College of Maine. Having won the Women's Cross Country Staff of the Year in November, the coaching group will look to sweep the Women's Coaching Staff awards with the Outdoor Championships in April.
Emmanuel gets its outdoor season underway on Saturday, March 21, with a trip to the Wesleyan Invitational, with events starting at 10:00 a.m.
Any Saints athlete who finished in the top-three in an event at the GNAC Championship is also recognized as an All-Conference performer. Those athletes on the podium are recognized as First Team, Second Team, or Third Team athletes, depending on their finish in the event.
