Box Score
Boston, Mass.- Suffolk's junior Jess Ferreira (Cambridge, Mass.)
rapped out five hits and drove in five runs at the plate while
tossing a three-hit shutout on the mound to lead the Rams to a
sweep of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball
doubleheader from Emmanuel by scores of 5-0 in the opener and 8-4
in the nightcap in games played Friday afternoon at Puopolo
Field.
Ferreira went 3-for-4 in the opening game triumph for the host
Rams (10-14, 9-5 Great Northeast), who jumped out to a 2-0 first
inning lead on an RBI single by senior Jenna Mourey (Rochester,
N.Y.) and a bases-loaded walk to junior Marie Trainor (Winthrop,
Mass.), and Suffolk tacked on single tallies in the middle innings,
highlighted by an RBI single by sophomore Angela Cole (Plainville,
Mass.) and a run-scoring triple by Ferreira, who went the distance
and struck out five to pick up her sixth win of the season. Cole
and Mourey each had two safeties as part of an 11-hit attack in the
opening contest for the Rams, as sophomore Erin McSheffrey
(Woburn, Mass.) collected two hits in the first game for the
visiting Saints (0-22-1, 0-12-1 Great Northeast). Freshman Christina
Lacoste (Belchertown, Mass.) went the distance as well inside
the circle for Emmanuel, as she struck out one.
Suffolk jumped out to a 7-0 lead through two innings of the
nightcap, as RBI singles by Ferreira, Cole and freshman Jessica
Kehlenbach (Bethany, Conn.) staked the hosts to a 3-0 first inning
advantage. Ferreira's seventh homerun of the spring accounted for
three of the four second inning tallies for the Rams, as freshman
Jacky Swift (Cranston, R.I.) added an RBI single. The Saints
answered back with four runs in the third, as a two-run double off
the bat of senior Jennifer Walsh
(Westfield, Mass.) that was sandwiched between RBI singles by
McSheffrey and senior Stephanie Rege
(Chicopee, Mass.) enabled Emmanuel to climb back to 7-4. Trainor
crossed the plate on an error in the bottom of the frame to close
out the scoring on the day. Mourey went the distance to pick up her
fourth win of the season for Suffolk in scattering nine hits and
fanning four. Cole and Swift joined Ferreira in rapping out two
hits each for the Rams, while McSheffrey capped a five-hit
afternoon with three more safeties in the nightcap for the Saints.
Rege chipped in with a pair of hits as well for Emmanuel.
Both teams will host Saint Joseph's (Maine) in their next
respective Great Northeast doubleheaders, as Suffolk squares off
with the Monks on Saturday afternoon at Puopolo Field beginning at
Noon before Emmanuel hosts Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon
across town at Roberto Clemente Field at Noon.
