EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Emmanuel College Softball Team took pair of decisions from Johnson & Wales University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double-header at Pierce Field on Saturday afternoon. Emmanuel took the 5-3 win in the opener and finished the sweep with a 5-1 victory in the nightcap. The games were the final regular season home contests for JWU seniors Sheri Plante (Millbury, Mass.) and Kirsten Griffiths (North Haven, Conn.). With the victories, the Saints have now reached double figures in wins and have more than tripled their win total from last season. After Saturday's sweep, Emmanuel is 11-21 on the year and 8-14 in the conference. The Wildcats drop to 8-29 overall and 6-16 in the GNAC.
In the opener, Johnson & Wales got on the board first on an RBI single by Griffiths. Emmanuel responded in the top of the second when a two-run homer by junior Erin McSheffrey (Woburn, Mass.) put the Saints ahead, 2-1. Emmanuel led 3-1 in the bottom of the third before a solo home run by Griffiths cut the lead to 3-2.
Emmanuel extended its lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth when they tallied a pair of runs, including an RBI triple by junior Kristina Borrelli (Kingston, Mass.). The Saints then held on for the 5-3 victory. Griffiths was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI for JWU while junior Ashley Mata (Wheeling, Ill.) was 2-for-3 in the setback for the Wildcats. McSheffrey was 1-for-3 with a run and three RBI in the win for Emmanuel, while junior Samantha Luther (Carlisle, Mass.) went 2-for-4 for the Saints. Freshman Jesse Hutchins (Sebago, Maine) picked up the win, allowing one earned run with three strikeouts in the complete-game.
Both teams capitalized on errors early in the nightcap with the game tied 1-1 after two innings of play. In the top of the third, an RBI single by junior Danielle Andruskiwec (Orange, Conn.) gave Emmanuel the 2-1 lead. Freshman Christina Proulx (Boxborough, Mass.) added RBI singles in the fourth and again in the sixth en route to the 5-1 victory for Emmanuel. McSheffrey was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the win for Emmanuel, while Hutchins notched the victory, allowing one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts in seven innings of work. Griffiths was 2-for-2 in the setback for Johnson & Wales, while junior Liana Rivera (Queens, N.Y.) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on nine hits.
The Wildcats will wrap up the 2009 campaign on Sunday, April 19th when they travel to Rivier College for a GNAC contest, starting at 1:00 p.m. The Saints will play their last regular season games on Sunday as well. Emmanuel will take on Norwich University in Northfield, Vt. in a 1pm start.
